Cinnamon Apple FlatbreadBreakfast this morning was this Cinnamon-Apple Flatbread, which is both on the King Arthur Flour blog and recipe collection. It was very good despite being re-heated after being baked yesterday afternoon. The recipe calls for 3 hour-long risings--this is not a recipe I'm going to get baked before breakfast. Or brunch, even. I'm not a fan of maple syrup (heresy to those of you who are, I know) so I used golden syrup instead with the boiled cider, and about half the amount under the assumption that I'm going to want things less sweet than most printed recipes. It's definitely a keeper. One big attraction of this recipe is that it can use unfed sourdough starter. I'm in the club that hates to throw away that cup of starter at each feeding, and will add this to my options for using it instead.

In the blog comments someone suggested trying this with cheese on top instead of the cinnamon-syrup mixture. That sounds very promising, and may be my next experiment. I was also thinking of trying it as a pizza base (also a KA suggestion) but got sidetracked by another sourdough pizza dough recipe for unfed starter (OK, mine got fed yesterday, but I'll used unfed *next* time) and the dough is rising for dinner.

Dr E. was busy having a baby on Thursday when I went in for a check after a week in the walking cast boot. (Apparently her due date was Friday.) Instead I saw Dr. S., a fill-in (Dr. E. has a solo practice), who was quite harried trying to see a full schedule of patients with no prep and deal with an office computer system and files she was unfamiliar with. The staff was harried trying to get Dr. S. to do things their way. <g>

I tried to offer a summary of my problems, but got cut off in favor of a few directed questions, an out-loud reading of the MRI report, and a brief physical exam in which Dr. S. was somewhat frustrated because nothing hurt. I told her that was the way it went--when I'm not hurting, generally no pressure or movement will hurt. When I am hurting, there's a definite are and type of pain...until it stops again.

Anyway, we didn't discuss any treatment except continuing the walking cast/boot for at least a 4-week period, then see if it was ready for PT. She suggested I try to sleep in the boot, keep it pumped up tight to really restrict all movement possible, and try getting an elastic ankle brace for additional support. All these are underway--sleeping in the thing is...OK, the ankle brace was bought yesterday and is now on for the first time, and I'm keeping more pressure in the boot except for occasional rest breaks where I'm careful not to move around. We'll see how this goes.

Don't know when Dr. E. will be back. I asked the receptionist, but she said they were playing it by ear. That could mean weeks or months, I guess, but I'd assume she will try to get back in the office quickly given the one-woman operation it is.

I spread an old sheet over the dry-clean-only comforter to try to limit the amount of cat hair that gets on it, and thus extend the cleaning cycle. (Yes, it was a mistake--I need to find a light duvet and washable covers, because a washable comforter is too big for my washing machine anyway. I do like the colors on this one, though...)

Fred occasionally decides that she *must* sleep directly on the comforter. When she does, a mere sheet is no obstacle...

Chipmunk in the bird feederHow many sunflower seeds are in those cheek pouchs?

Chipmunk in the bird feederReady to leap for the pole and a dash to Mrs. Chipmunk back in the den.

And I wonder how long it will be before he'll be too fat to fit through the "squirrel proof" cage?

First repair, of sorts: after returning from Ohio, my 3G connection didn't work. I first attributed this to poor AT&T connections, but I was consistently showing 4 or 5 bars of signal...but no 3G. I checked the Apple support boards and found a handful of similar reports--people activated an account in one city, and then couldn't connect somewhere else.

repair tale... )

The repair jaunt was Thursday, during what ended up being a very extended lunch hour. On my off-day Friday I did my usual Weight Watchers meeting at 12:30, then decided to eat lunch at Lucky Key chinese in the same strip mall to avoid the taking off and putting back on of the boot. I settled into a booth, placed my order, and pulled out the iPad to read a book. My waiter paused after delivering soup-and-eggroll and asked "Computer?" I said yes, sort of, it was an iPad. Next thing I knew there was a cluster of 4 waiters and waitresses saying "Internet?" "Read books? In Chinese?" (I didn't know the answer to that one.) The conversation then lapsed into Chinese as they stood and discussed it. Later in the meal, one more waitress paused and peered across the table to see it, but didn't make a comment. The English skills at Lucky Key are mixed.

And last iPad tidbit: I listened to a library audiobook today. Overdrive audiobooks and Briggs' Silver Borne )
